eggcrate is just a plastic material that is like a grid. The stuff I use is just from the hardware store and is used for 2'x4' flourescent lights in a drop ceiling. You can cut it to fit any rectangular shape...As I said it is plasctic and has many uses (people use it for tops to their tank because it allows the tank to breath.

Does anyone use something else?

Did you mod your Outer Orbit? The 48" version doesn't come with T5's (obviously). I'm actually running 2 130w duel actinics but if there's a mod to make it less expensive to run it, I'm all for it.

Check out my blog in the link below, I actually JUST made a post about using eggcrates and the Outer Orbit. The eggcrate actually doesn't even get warm, but I did cut the center as well to let more light in.

Kapaknight. The outer orbit is not mod. They make them with T5 now.

It may not ne on the net, but if you call and ask for it then they will build it for you. I think it like $20 - $50 more then the old Outer orbit

thanks Geoff. this mean I don't have to worry about the eggcrate melting

eggcrate is sold under the name of light diffuser. Any type of DIY store carries it....

Interesting... cause I'm about to mod my Outer Orbit to upgrade the ballasts to 250w's for the MH.

the outer orbits come with a small piece of glass sheilding the mh, it should help with the heat alot, i wouldnt worry about it melting the plastic.

The glass protects the tank from UV... not sure how well it serves as a heat shield. Either way, the eggcrate is safe.

please bear with me. Got another question.

the light came in today I was hopping I can use the legs to mount it on my 72 bowfront, but the light legs are too big to mount it that way, so I have to hang it...

Any how once I turn the MH on I got a lots of noices.. So much noices that I can heard it from another room. Is that nomal?

Also once I turn the MH off and turn it back on it did not come back on. Am I suppose to wait for it to cool down first?

thank

depending on the ballast there can be a good amount of humm from them when the lights are on. that is why mine are in the basement.

it will generally take about 10mins for the bulbs to reset themselves and get ready to fire the bulbs again. this is normal.
