(I'm the round one behind the staghorn coral, a.k.a.: camera ham... anyway, I know, I blinked, but they wouldn't retake the photo)
OK, some personal information to help you put the photo in perspective (here ya go, Alice and Jon)...
I am an 827 year old stand of
Montastrea annularis, in about 6 feet of water, somewhere in the Tropical West Atlantic. Let me tell you folks, I've paid my dues. I probably have several (hundred) children...or even grandchildren, but who knows? They never write or call...
Once upon a time I was a hard working broadcaster and nutrient and carbon sink, but I've been on disability ever since a clumsy Spaniard tripped over me back at low tide in the mid 16th century...apparently the blind fool and his crew were trying to pull their precious "little" bloody treasure ship off our shoal. Oh well, he got his...he landed in a patch of Millepora (sly grin and wink...oh wait, do polyps wink?

)... but now I lead the life of a retiree. Sure, its exciting when the cruise ships are in (Mr. "Party all the Time")...but it can get old, getting groped by all those snorkelers grasping for a brace against the current. And, boy, my calcium carbonate growths rings are getting too old for these bloody hurricanes...
...but I still have the life as far as I'm concerned.
OK, everyone else's turn!
Chris, the bitter
Montastrea.
