? for sailfin caretakers
I have been looking at sailfin tangs. I see they get to be about 16 inches at adult. Some of the sites are saying minimum of 75 gallons. That cant be right? I thought of getting one for my 90. How fast do they grow? I am already planning a larger tank for the dinning room something in the 180 range. It will be at least 6 months before this happens so I was wondering if I start with a young sailfin(the one I am looking at is about 2 inches) will it outgrow the 90 within a year tops? I know they like nori and can't find it anywhere. Where can I find this stuff?

Ive had a sailfin before. I dont think it will outgrow the 90 in a yr.
The Desjardins are from the red sea and more expensive but have been known to eat bubble algae. Also they have better color.
I had the cheaper one though (cant remember latin name lol) which was a nice fish also. Mine got along with my yellow at first but after a few yrs they fought and the yellow won eventually. I still have the yellow and thats the only fish it ever had a problem with but they were in my 55 and prolly fought over space. This was yrs ago before the boards and tang police lol.

Okay. That's good then. The one at the lfs is really cute and I was quite taken by it.

I think the sailfin would be fine in the 90 gallon for a while, but they do grow fast. They are beautiful fish but will fight with any other similarly-bodied tang, like a yellow tang......

I have a huge sailfin and it is the coolest fish ever IMHO. It is very personable, constantally following me around the tank and watching me, it eats from my hand, and even gets mad if I come home late and don't give it food in time. Mine doesn't really care about my yellow tang, they ignore each other except for feeding time where they eat side by side.
I agree with above it won't outgrow a 90 in a year, Nori is a type of green dried algae that the tangs love, it's called Nori at an asian market, but I use something like this, if this is the green one:

Enjoy your fish, you'll love it!

I must have gotten a rogue sailfin...............He was the whole reason for the shop vac incident.
The one i put in my reef picked a large brain to death in 3 days. It was a desjardin.

LOL, I think you did, but then again I have only SPS in my tank, I remember the shop vac story, I told my friend to do that with his yellow that is (was) eating his clams.
Oh wait, I do have one torch.

Okay I have the algae sheets you posted in the fridge. I got it for the damsels but they show no interest. Went to pick up the sailfin but it was sold. They are ordering another for me. Should I have him hold it to make sure it is healthy after it arrives? If so how long?

I usually don't buy fish unless they have been at the LFS for at least a week and I see them eat normal food that you feed.

I have a Desjardin Tang, that is at least 3-4 inches in my 90gal and is doing great. I agree on asking the LFS to see if you can let him be for a week or so and see how he does after shipping and makes sure he eats. I have done that with my tang and my black cap basslet and they had no problems with it. Hope he does well for you He is a great looking fish
