I'm in the middle of a 232 gallon tank build, and I've have been choosing equipment primarily based on quality and sound levels.
On Friday, I started cycling my base rock in a 90 gallon plastic trashbin in the garage. I put one of my new MP60's to work circulating the water, and I have to say I was shocked at the loudness of the whirring sound of the motor. I've eliminated the vibration sounds from misaligned wet/dry sides. The sound I'm hearing is also not the bearings. It's the motor simply whirling around.
At first, i thought I had a defective unit, so I got out my second MP60 and found the same noise. A search around the internet led me to conclude that this is the reality for these pumps.
Wow. What a disappointment. Two of these in my living room is going to drive me CrAzY. I'm sure it performs its function admirably, but for $750 I expected a quieter product. Everything I've chosen for this tank has been selected for its reputation for near silent operation. I'm really disappointed that I overlooked the noise issues with these pumps.
While I would not tell anyone not to buy these, I do want to make sure that the next person doing research about these pumps (and who might stumble upon this thread) is aware of the noise levels.
The MP60's will quiet down over the next few days. For whatever reason, they start off much louder than they will once "broken in". They will however never be silent, and your cautions are valid. The quietest quality pumps are the Tunze, but they have their own set of drawbacks.
Either way, give the pumps 3 or 4 days, and they will quiet down significantly.

Well of course the Tunze is going to be quieter, the motor is under water?
The MP60's Ecotech had at MACNA were super quiet, but I have heard from a lot of people that 10's, 40's and 60's are loud and the winding sound when ramping up is almost unbearable. My 40's are really quiet, can't hear them at all.
I know that customer service is great, I would give them a call and see what they can do to help if it really bothers you after the break in period.
So they are not actually on a tank yet? If you are running them on a "plastic" tote I would think the plastic itself would make them louder.I would wait and see how bad it is on the tank before getting too upset.
The plastic surely amplifies the sound but even with the dry side unattached and in my hand it is louder than I would like. I hope it does quiet down after a break-in period. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it is once I get it installed on the tank.
Well to begin with, the Tunze Turbelle Stream 6305 which was the MP60's only competition is now discontinued. While it was in production, it was more expensive than the Vortech. Add to that the multicontroller which will only get you close to the programming that the Vortech is capable of, and you were well over a $1000.
The 6305 magnet will only fit tanks up to 25mm. That's inconveniently under an inch, for any who actually have 1 inch thick glass or acrylic.
Also the size of the pump itself would be an eyesore to me. I tried a small one out in my 150 and did not like the shadows it cast or the amount it stuck out into the tank.
Additionally, these turbelle streams are not silent as many claim. There is a fish store I frequent that is running a couple on a large tank, and they are audible from several feet away. Leonardo also purchased some 6255's or 6305's for his apogon reef (RC) , and sent them back because they were too "loud".
I just recently bought a mp10 and it was pretty loud the first couple days...now i am either used to the noise and don't notice it or they have broken in and become silent...if you are running them at 100% there is obviously gonna be some noise, there is a serious little motor operating these things...just my 2 cents
Ok folks. The jury is in... These pumps are just too loud for my taste. My bedroom is 50 feet away, and I can hear the motor whirring from the bedroom at night, and in the daytime, they are loud enough to be annoying while I'm watching television. They have to go. I'm going to try some Tunze powerheads instead.
I'll send you a private message ajohnson to see if you are still interested. If not, I'll be putting them up for sale on ebay shortly.
