zoa eating nudi ....

dipped one of the zoas in my tank because it wasn't opening this week. i think there must have been 20 or nudis in the bottom when i was done ... now i get to pray they didn't get on any other frags : (

was one of the few zoas that didnt get dipped before entering my tank. goes to show you need to do each and every one.

Not being much of a zooanthid fan so don't know much about them, what is the dipping procedure for the nudibranches ?

I was thinking the same thing, I have been using airline tubing tosuck them off the zoas which is a PIA. If there is a dip that kills them I will be much more happy!

well i do a freshwater dip with about 5 drops of lugals iodine in a gallon of water for about 5 min. never seems to harm the zoas. problem is it doesnt kill the nudi eggs , ya have to get them off yourself.

nudis are cool looking little things though , too bad they are so harmfull.

and the eggs .

i got the dip from this thread.

http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...hreadid=451720

and his update

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...hreadid=554264

i highly recommend doing the dip to every zoa you put in the tank . its super easy to do and as the saying goes, an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure ?

personaly i skip some of the steps . i just use my ro/di frsh water, 5 drops of lugols and i set the container the tank for a hour so the water becomes the same temp and then dip for 5 or so min. before i take them out i swish it really hard to get all the dead crap off.

I do a 10-15min freshwater dip then 10-15min lugols dip. and as Ryan stated some wrasse's will eat them. I know leopard and purple fairy wrasse's eat about any type of worm/pod that they see.

the guy at zomaina.com told me he has luck with the yellow and green corris wrasses eating them. i was going to get a few but i'm worried they may just die because i don't have a sand bed for them to sleep in.

BTW don't ever buy anything from that place . took me months to get my frags and there is a handful of threads on RC about him strait up ripping people off.

well looked closer and all the zoas around that rock have eggs : ( looks like i will be plucking them off by hand later.

i think they came from a frag i got from this guy who cultures them in the wild , i bet his whole reef is filled with them. no way to eradicate them in the wild once ya got them. on a side note they are just incredible zoas i got from him though , they are not only as blue as you see in the pic but i think they are even bluer and that's with only my 65k lights on

Is it possible to have these nudis and not actually see them? I keep checking for them, but have never seen them. However, I have something wiping out one of my large colony of zoos. It is weird - several polyps will close up and if I push the polyp lightly to the side, I can see that it has a razor-blade like slit in the base. If I push it a little harder, it will actually break off at the cut. Then eventually the polyp rots and dissolves away. It is tearing through this large colony I have. But, it is not scattered, it seems to be spreading by contact maybe? Twice I have performed surgery and cut off all the diseased areas, but both times it started again within a week.

Does that sound like the way nudis attack or is it a disease, or what?

That's a good question. Do you have any zoo colonies not affected? The nudis seem to munch on the tops, not chop them down from the bottom. Any idea how long you have to go without seeing them before you can feel like you're in the clear? It's been months since I've seen any or had zoos close. I don't think they are the disaster some think. You obviously want to rid your tank of them, but they are more of a nuisance than something that will wipe out whole colonies. IMO, IME. etc etc...

actually he sells them on his site for $30. i don't think its the same guys you are talking about but maybe it is . anyways if ya buy a few blues he will send ya few different colors of blue and all of which are simply amazing. beware of the nudis though : ) when people say true blue they are normally full of crap but these are incredible , he says these pics are taken in day light without any type of blue lighting, after seeing them in my tank i have no doubt this is true.

personally I'm not sure its worth it , getting nudis can wipe out your whole collection. im guessing if these have them , his whole growing area has them.
