Whoops!
About two weeks ago, our apt building downtown shut-off the a/c because Fall was apparently here. Well, as you know, it warmed-up over the past week. Usually, with the a/c, my wife and I would keep the temp at about 68. Without it, it was definitely warmer--maybe 76 or so. It made for some uncomfortable sleeping.
But, I never even considered how it may affect my reef. Two days ago, I looked at the tank, and one of my corals (a. rosaria) was losing it's "skin." Since it was doing so well, I couldn't imagine what the sudden problem could be. Then I checked the temp: 89 degrees. I immediately did cold-water changes, and had a fan set up so it was blowing on the sump. Some of my other corals looked retracted (a. secale, yongei), but a. abrolhensis (sp?) from Bill B. and blue-tipped stags (from Ken) were looking unusually unaffected.
Anyhow, all is well now, temp is down to my normal 82-84. Now that it's cool outside, this won't be a problem again until the Spring, when it starts warming-up again, but the building will still have the heat on. Ahh....to live in a house, where I can control the climate.
Just thought I'd share my near-disaster experience with you. Anyone else have a problem last week with temp?

Hi Sam -- Glad to hear you caught it in time, and everything recovered.
We had our air off last week, too, and we get afternoon sun in the living room, so it got more than a little toasty in our house. I kept a close eye on the temps in both my tanks, especially now with MHs on the 72. At one point it crept up to 83 (it's usually around 80, give or take a degree), but getting a little more aggressive with the fan over the sump prevented it from going any higher.

wanna go halfseees on a house sam? we just got heat the other day-while it was warm! those couple weeks of fall we got late september put quite a tax on the nano's heater-which was up to the task. unfortunately my girlfriend doesn't thermoregulate like me or you or a jalli 50W titanium heater. shaddup crevalle-she's not a reptile-she's cute
no she generally complains until i go get her a blanket or sweater, or if we're in the car she directs all the "unpleasant" air my direction so that i can turn the heat down/up. she sounds like a peach huh? ok maybe i'm misrepresenting the situation, but its more funnier this way.
tg
glad you caught it in time dude! hopefully the losses were minimal!

Yea, we have thermostat battles in our house, too. We both sneak over and turn it up or down when the other's not looking...

What drag. Sounds like alls well now. I had my tank get to 89 this summer during a power outage (Dave Grigor saved the day for me as i was out of town) so that abrolhosensis has been through it before. Tough piece I guess!

LOL!
Sounds like thermostat "battles," as Kaba calls them, are fairly commonplace! I hear you both! My wife is ALWAYS hot. We have the windows open and like fifty fans in the bedroom at night. I'm lying there with frost on my nose, and she's just using the sheet.
SawC--yes, I remember reading about your near-miss disaster earlier this year. Technology (your cell phone) and David saved the day. I still think it's awesome that your phone calls you if something goes awry.

lol Do you ever turn up the temp more then you want under the false assumption that somehow despite the laws of physics that the temp will go up or down sooner? : )

Crevalle, it's the exact opposite in our household...except I'm not quite at the extreme as your wife. My wife has SE Asian blood going through her veins, and boy does she prefer hot and humid. I have a little Scandahoovian in me, and, well, I don't like it so hot and humid...when it's 90 outside and I have to go out to cool down?!?!
Man, she'd kill me if she saw this (and she's 3 feet away from me on the couch).

Yea, I think it's typically women that can't tolerate cold. I'm running around in a sweater, and he's in shorts.
Hmmm...kind of funny. Seems opposites do indeed attract, at least with regard to temperatures.

Hey Derek... you think you have a dilema... I have basocally half mexican in my veins that like hot and humid, then on the other hand I have scandinavian blood on the other half, that likes COLD! I am at a constant battle with myself. Then my wife goes and out does it by setting the AC to be like 65 in the house in the summer and 75 in the winter. If you come to my house on a 90 degree day... be sure to wear sweats and hat. In the winter bring your swimsuit and sun-tan lotion.
