whats wrong with my zoa's

There is a brown coat of whatever on my zoa's. It is on the stems. Any Idea of what it is or how to remedy it. Some open up half way and the rest aren't opening at all. its been like this for a while. they haven't been dying, they but the little ones stopped growing. Any Ideas?

This is the only pic I have right now. You can't see the brown but that is all the farther they open up. I will get a better pic tomorrow.

When I first got them they opened up all the way everyday. After about a month they closed up for about another month. I thought they were dying. Then one day, back to normal. Now they have this brown stuff on there stems. It has been there for at least a month and a half. The orange ones open up more lately but still have this brown stuff on them. The green ones haven't opened up at all and have that brown stuff all over them.

I got a RO unit about a month ago and have been doing 20% water changes once or twice a week to try to get the water quality up. That is the only abnormal thing I have done in probly 4 months

It is on the base of them on the outside. On the orange ones the brown stops about half way up. And that is how far they open up now.
