If you have koi you do not want to risk, I would not put the koi into the pond untill the pond is within 5 degrees of the holding tank. If you are willing to take losses, any time is fine. The koi are misrepresentend as being as "hardy", which is true, but extreme climactic changes, does not fit in normal "hardiness." Minnesota has extreme weather, which we are willing to endure. Many fish however, are not evolved to deal with it....unfortunately!

I visited a Parade of Ponds home last summer that overwinters their Koi outside in their pond and have for 8 years. They are large and the volume of the pond without the stream running is not that great. I would think that if you could gradually drop the temp of the holding tank to match that of the pond you would be ok. My only concern would be that the fish are ready to eat now, will it mess them up if the temps drop down below 55 degrees. It shouldn't as they experience temperature variations this time of year in a pond setting anyway. If your pond water is only 45 degrees, their bodies will no longer need food, in fact they can't process anything that they might eat at that temperature. Your best course of action might be to drop your holding tank to 45 and keep it there until it's warm enough to transfer them to the pond. HTH

The temp is still cold here at night, I wouldn't move them out till the temp remains stable at 50 degrees at night. Otherwise you are going to see temp swings during the day and night, and the fish get really stressed out from that.
