What exactly do Phosban reactors do?

As the title says..... And when should I get one.

Thanks,

Just because PO4 levels test at zero does not mean they are at zero. Just means that the algae is using it faster than it can leach into the water column...

Just forces water to pass throught the media. Just place the media in a bag a putting in the sump it won't work as effeciently. HOB Filters/Canisters such as Magnum etc. can be just as effective.

IMO: If your tank is mature, your not having a problem with algae etc, do regular water changes, good quality topoff water etc, watch what types of foods and quantities you use, you shouldn't need a phosphate remover at least not on a regular basis. If you tank is new, it could be beneficial as a preventative maintenance until your tank becomes mature to help keep hair algae at a minimum.

i also think it stops the phosban from clumping and forming one big rust ball

i have one on my tank...it has cut down on algae growth. my major complaint is that the media tends to cause calcium (at high levels) precipitation and thereby media clumping (in spite of the fluidized reactor). at a certain point phosphate becomes a limiting nutrient for critter growth-therefore i wouldn't recommend overdosing it.

if anyone is interested in one let me know-i've got the phosban 150 rx, a new container of media (150g-i think), minijet powerhead...(sorry hijack) i can't close the stand doors with this puppy hooked up and i think i have the algae thing in check

Duct tape should fix that problem.

I also read you can run other medias in them like carbon. I just wouldn't mix phosban and carbon.
