Too large of a skimmer??

Is it possible to have a skimmer thati s too large? Like a turbofloater on a 30gal or a huge (300 gal Euro reef on a 125 gal?

Is there too much skimming?

Depending on what your keeping.

If striving for a low nutrient system especially for SPS there really isn't anything too large. The worst case the skimmer would stop pulling out much because so little left.

I would think that as long as you shut it off for a while when you feed your tank it'd be fine.

i believe NO.

your skimmer will not skim as much and won't look like it is working as efficiently. i upgraded from a ES5-2 to a Reefmania (basically a Euro clone 6-2+ recirculation skimmer) and my RM one pulls off WAY lighter skimate. the ER pulled off dark stuff.

IMO the RM skimmer does a better job but since it is bigger...bigger riser also, it doesn't have a tank of full capacity so this skimmer looks like it pulls less.

i have had MANY people tell me that when they upgraded to a bigger skimmer thiers did the same thing!

I tend to agree with david as it all depends on what you are keeping. If running a sps tank there is no such thing as overskimming.

The only disadvantage I can see is if the power consumption our heat output is not worth it. Also consider space.
