tds testing

so i got a tds tester the other day and i tested my RO/DI water and it came up like 7-10. I dont have any algae problems at all. do i need to even bother myself finding out why its not zero ? btw all the filters/resin are new and the RO unit is like a year old. the tap water here is about 220 PPM

There might not be anything that you can do. The only other thing I would consider is adding another deionization filter.

Is your meter calibrated? I still have a fresh bag of 800ppm solution. I need to use it first, but if you need it after, you can have it.

Read here for a newbie opinion:

If it is off, or if your filters are not doing their job, it will still register on the TDS meter when the TDS rises. You will know by the rise in the TDS that the DI carts need to be changed again.

My tap water -with a water softener- registers at 330ppm. Distilled water registers at 0 PPM. I will calibrate it real time. 1 sec. I have to pee too, hold on, this may take a minute.

Wow, that was off a little. The 800ppm solution read as 682. Acclording to the scale on the solution 71.6 deg F solution should read 754ppm. My soultion at 72.1 read 682. I calibrated it and now my tap water clocks in at 447ppm at 67 and 344 at 114.5 deg F. Time to kick my water "softener" in the A.

If it is reading 7-10 now (with me assuming your RO-DI water is much less than 77 deg F) at normal temps it would read a little higher.

My RODI temp is a chilly 55.2. According to the scale on the solution the 800ppm solution at 50 is 578 and at 59 it is 649. I would assume you RODI is about the same temp, so maybe your meter is not calibrated.

Now to check the water filter. It read 14ppm at 66.4 deg. That is with 2 100GPD RO and 3 DI carts. My DI is VERY old. I know I need to replace them. But that guy with the bulk DI is way too busy for me to pick some up.

-tests were done with glass shot glasses "obatined" from chi-chi's. They were rinsed very well with distilled water. Probe was also rinsed with distilled between tests.

My conclusion- watch the meter and notice when it rises. After you notice algae, look at the TDS on the meter. Pick a number less than the TDS level on the algae date. That is when you need to change your DI, or maybe even your RO.

But thats just me.

I don't even listen to me.

If you have color changing DI, you can get more use out of it with the TDS meter because when it looks exhausted it still has several weeks to a month of life left in it. However when it goes it usually goes fast.

Everyone is different but my general rule of thumb is wait until I get a reading around 30 before switching. Some switch the moment it goes above 0-1.

You can also stretch it by adding a second add-on DI to the system. When you start getting readings. Move the 2 cartridge to the front and add new cartridge in back. That way you can always fully exhaust the first one......
