Starter corals...........coral newbie
What would be some good corals to start out with. I just set up my 75 gallon and once I get it cycled I would like to add a couple corals. Keep in mind that the inhabitants will be a 3" picasso trigger for sure, and I was looking into getting a flame hawkfish, a 6 line wrasse and a yellow watchman goby. The lighting I currently have is a 4x65W Current USA PC lighting w/ moonlights. I know the lighting will hold me back, but I would like to gain the experience of keeping corals before I start up my other tank, which will be a reef tank. Help me out if you can.

Never been interested in triggers I really don't know what corals ( if any ) can be housed with them. Triggers are pretty much a Fish only type setups.
Probably need to stick with just the fast growing very hardy types, softies and mushrooms.

Do you already have the trigger or is it just a, my hearts set on one, kind of thing? It's really going to limit what you can do just by having that one type of fish.
Kevin
P.S. I might have a brand new 400 watt eballast and 20k radium bulb for sale in the next week if it blows the circuit in my office when I plug it in : ). Crossing my fingers.

Read up on the trigger before you put any corals in there. Find out why they are not reef safe.

I already have the picasso trigger and I will be selling my niger trigger soon.
I don't want to go coral crazy, I would just like to add something to brighten up the tank. Would polyps or zoos be ok?

I would find something really cheap and add just that one thing. Then wait til the next meeting (about a month) to add something else if it doesn't turn into lunch.

I was planning on attending the next meeting, does anyone have anything they could give me a good deal on. I'd hate to buy a $20 snack

I've got a decent sized capnella you can have for free. Prolly about 3 inches. I wouldn't mind seeing it get eaten.

Would it be bad for the fish if he did eat it. Also, what exactly do you feed corals? I'll take it from and give it a try, are you planning on going to the next meeting?

Yes, I'm going. you don't have to feed it and if the trigger dies because he ate it (it won't), it will prove my theory that you can't kill capnella.

The corals you can house with your trigger with depend a lot on your trigger's personality. Also be aware that your trigger's personality may change as it matures.
I would suggest starting with some mushrooms or xenia and see what the trigger's interest is toward them for the first month or so. If there is a positive result, maybe try something else. But know that everything can crumble through your fingers in an instant if tempermant changes. Some triggers will chew on live rock, if a coral is in the way, it will be damaged for sure. I have a trigger that completely ignored snails but then got an interest for them one day. I had to move him to another tank.
A picasso and corals CAN mix, but great caution is advised.
