The bio-load is pretty heavy for a 40 gallon, but I do like the look.

About your question...To be honest I haven't checked my nitrates in a long time. Knock on wood, I haven't had any obvious reason to do it because things have appeared to be pretty stable. I do have an ~18 gallon refugium with a bunch of chaeto and live
rock rubble that may have an impact. As for a skimmer, just an Aqua C Remora. I do 6 to 7 gallon water change every week and a half or so.
