RODI question

I am getting a slight diatom bloom in the tank and I am attributing it to silica in the water. The questions I have is where can I find a TDS meter locally and also is the DI resin what takes out the silica or is it the ro membrane?

I haven't been able to find locally. Sears used to carry it but haven't seen them there anymore. I have been wanting to replace mine as well. Water or something go into it and the display doesn't work anymore....

I just ordered one from ebay so it will be interesting to see waht the TDS is of the water. I am also going to pick up a silicate test.

There are special silicate removing membranes you can get to replace your normal RO membrane. Where does Woodbury's water come from?

No idea where it comes from. I know that when they tested the water before we added the water softner it was the hardest water the guy had seen. So I can just about imagine what the tds is straight out of the tap. I have read that silicate won't register on a tds meter however I find this hard to believe as I was allways understanding siicate to be a solid. Never had a problem with it before except when the tank first went up and went through the initial bloom. Just recently It has started to pop up along with some tiny patches of hair algae. Phosphates have allways been at 0 along with nitrate at 0. That leads me to believe it is my rodi filters are the root cause of the problem. I just like to care of this at the source of the problem. Here is a picture of the tiny patch that I am getting. The overflow was a hair algae factory and I cleaned that out.

Gook luck with the hair algae issue, but that coral looks pretts sweet. Do you have any updated tank pics? Did you upgrade your lighting?

redwinger,

Even though your phosphate tests zero, there is still an excess of it in the tank if algae is growing. Algae absolutely cannot grow without phosphate - all algae. The presence of it is the best phosphate kit you don't have to buy... P kits are a waste IMO, since the great majority only test for a portion of the phosphate family. I woudn't sweat it, since we all have P. Your algae isn't problematic by any means. Add a few more snails and hermits to pick up some slack...

Grahm I relize that no phosphates will show due to them being consumed by the algae. I know they are being introduced from some source I just need to find out what from. I am going to test the food later and see if that is where it is coming from which I think it could be.

John, if you've got a fuge, you'll have some hair algae from time to time.

Well I tested the reefchili I have been using for phosphates and sure enough, I now know where the phosphates are coming from.

unless you have a good test kit because you shold be under .015 for ideal phosphate and most test say 0 and really isn't.
