Pregnancy Cautions w/Tank??
Well...after 3 1/2 years of second child infertility...we are FINALLY pregnant!
I know that I can no longer change the cat litter because of toxins.....but I was curious if there is anything I need to worry about with our tank. My husband does most of the maintenence to it already.....I pretty much only help with water changes and once in awhile stick my arm in to move a rock or flip an upside down snail. I wasn't sure if the corals release anything into the water that I need to beware of while sticking my arm in there. I have tried to do some research on it but cannot come up with very much.
Does anyone know if I need to keep out of the tank?
Thanks!

Thanks!
David - Does your wife ever do anything in the tank? And Congrats to you too!
I would assume there would be no concerns as long a I wash my hands and arms when I am done in there.....but I want to make sure first.

Congrats! Have friends who went through the same tough road, no fun. Enjoy and stay healthy. Maybe we will find that the reef tank is VERY theraputic for pregnant women. Who knows.

The cat litter thing is because of a pretty specific disease called Toxoplasmosis that can harm the fetus. You should just follow standard precautions like using gloves when in the tank. This is not because of any specific threat to a fetus, but just a smart thing to do pregnant or not. Congrats

Congratulations!!
My sister and her husband have been trying for their 1st for several years, nothing yet. I can only imagine how excited you are.
A pediatrician friend of mine is unaware of any concerns regarding reef tank maintenance, and he has a 75-gal reef of his own. He suggested that if you have a concern, just don't do it. They do make those long grabbers for moving things around in the tank. You don't even need to get your hands wet!
Keep us posted.

MNgirl, I am the primary caregiver to the tank. However, it is her hobby too and is fully willing and knowledgable ( Of course she has 24/7 access to a great mentor ).
Thomas, I was hoping to remain the house majority speaker but now looks like back to gridlock. Haven't been able to imagine myself a girl dad. Barbie dolls and tea parties is just not my thing but I am sure I will manage.....Not ready to start talking quitting time because I have a good feeling I know who will be taking the "snip" when it comes to that discussion ....

LOL @ David..
Congrats to all..
I have to tell the story of a guy in the hospital when we were in there waiting for Ashlin to come out...
I guess him and his wife had been trying for a long time (2-3 years) to have a child with no success. Anyway, they didn't find out the sex of the child until delivery. He came out of the birthing room and went into the lounge to let all his friends know about the baby. He called up one of his friends and says, "Man, what am I going to do with a girl. I can't play football with a girl. I don't even know how to relate to girls.." I found this hilarious because it was a tall, huge black man.
David, wait till the first time the girl really gets you mad and tries your patience, then smiles at you...you will just melt and forget what you were mad at. trust me on this one

So true Greg, I orignally wanted a boy and we had a girl. I trully think I have more fun with by little girl than I would with a boy. She has a way of making bad day disappear in a matter of seconds. Congrats David!

Because both of you are pregnant... you should hire some one to take care of the tank... But in the normal case, where only the woman gets pregnant, i see no reason why the man shouldn't do all the tank clean up! It certianly better than finding out the hard way about some rare new something or other!!!
CONGRATZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
