Parasire / Fungus among us?

I bought a powder brown tang from petco (yeah I know) and he has something wrong with him. He has a few white spots on his fins. I assume they are not ich because they are bigger than what I thought ich would be. The biggest one, on his back fin is about half the size of a grain of rice.

He is in the QT, where he has been since I bought him 2 weeks ago. The water quality in there has been tested twice now and has been great both times. I am also changing out about 1-2 gallons a day from the 10 gal QT with water from the main tank, and occasional freshly mixed SW. The fish is eating like a champ and shows no other symptoms.

Any ideas on what he has? Treatment options? Should I go find some copper?

I tried to get a good pic, but after taking 40+ pics this is the best I got.

You sure that is a powder brown? It looks like a Naso to me... Might try hypo salinity as a solution . How big is your QT? Tangs can't handle small spaces very long IMO, and sometimes will get worse in a small QT tank than if you toss them in the display.

Yes indeed, he is a naso. I don't know where powder brown came from. Must be all that Mt dew in my system right now. I am going to crash soon.

He is in a 10 Gal tank, which I know is way too small for him, but he doesn't seem to be stressed by the tank size.

He has shown a little improvement over the last week. Or at least I think he has.

So Hyposalinity, like around 1.01? How long should this level be kept? And how long do I take to acclimate him to the new salinity, or are you just talking a dip?

Has he been eating well? Are you feeding fortified foods?

Probably not too fortified, what would you recommend?

I looked for the buttom, but I coldn't see it. Maybe I was looking too high.
But it's so much easier when someone else posts a link

Thanks

I'm not sure about SW fish but in koi when they have the weird growths on their fins it is a type of herpes. Kind of like a cold sore on humans, with koi they usually go away with cold temperatures. Also on koi it doesn't cause the fish any harm, except that it is not aesthetically pleasing. But then again it could be completely different.

Have the white spots grown at all? Are they look fuzzy? Are they solid or gellantin-y(?) ?

The spots have gotten a little smaller in the last week. They look soft. Like some white lint.

Great, now I have crabs and possibly herpes!

Don't tell my girlfriend.

Have you tried to scrape any of the tissue off? It kinda sounds like fungus from the way you describe it, some malachite green should clear it up (if it is a fungus). BTW do you have a microscope?

That is kind of what it looks like to me, a fungus. I have not tried to scrape it off. Should I? I do not have a microscope.
