depends, what are you planning on putting inside the 55? Will you have a sump? What kind of skimmer? How big of a fuge?

I agree it should depend on everything else but I believe in over filtration. Never can have to much.

The more filters you use the less water changes you will have to do.
as long as you are changing them when needed other wise they become nitrate factories

from what I have read

yeah, i had all that on a 55 and ditched the can pretty quickly, its not needed so why maintenence it. at least in my case. I hate working for no extra payoff.

THere is always going to be an extra payoff talking in terms of long term. Personally there is no such thing as overkill but if you wanted to do overkill put all your money into a skimmer that is overkill

ditch cannister and spend extra on skimmer

I originally had a canister and now only use it for water movement.

I have the Berlin Turbo venturi hang on skimmer, 30gallon fuge, Eheim 2028 canister, and a DIY sump.

I plan to have just a fish tank until I get everything figured out, then hopefuly a reef. (but thats a long ways off)

I have to second the importance of a good skimmer or a oversized skimmer. It has made a huge difference on my tank.

sounds like a great fish only setup if that is what you are planning, if you are going to use LR you won't need the canister but can't really hurt you as long as you maintain it properly.

From what I have read they are extremelly overrated. IMO a hang on is in no way even close to what a needle wheel recirculating or a beckett based skimmer is.
