over skimming? UBER Skimming!

That's right. spazz has done it again, and once more, used me as his victim!

He called me up and said, "Hey, bring that skimmer up here, I wanna try something."

The skimmer in question was his original recirculating skimmer prototype, here:

So I drained, it packed it up, and headed on over.

I should have brought a camera. But even if I HAD, I was in too much SHOCK to have remembered to take any pictures as he put my wonderful skimmer on his TABLE SAW and CUT THE BOTTOM HALF OFF!

Unable to watch this surgery further, I made excuses, and left.

And here's what he did to it.

About 48" tall, the main body is 33" of 12" cast acrylic. Twin vertically mounted OR3500's, room for two more. Conical main tower top. Twist lock removal of the whole head for easy cleaning. Extra wide air lines feeding the gate valve controlled venturis on the way to the needle wheel impellers. Adjustable flow pattern in the skimmer body. All Schedule 80 fittings.

I'm gravity feeding it directly off my overflow, about 300 gallons per hour, about one system volume per hour, which gives a dwell time of well over three minutes.

And even though it was just clean, and it's skimming a system with a VERY low bioload (just well cured live rock and a couple candycane frags), and I'm still dialing it in, here's what it's doing! Never knew 'pods pooped that much!

The moral of the story: If spazz ever says to you, "Hey, bring that xxxxx over here, I wanna try something..." DO IT!

But don't stay to watch...

LOL nice story.

Tell me what to do, I will chop it up. I have access to a 36 inch variable speed band saw. I'm happy with it now but I think I would like to make it look fancy. I was thinking of doing a recirc mod and running it off my overflow. I was also thinking of adding 3 more sedra 9000s to it.

you need to start over if your going to add that much air to the body. it would have to be 12" in diam for that many pumps.

I am going to do a DIY massive spazz skimmer sometime. Maybe out of 16 inch tube.

Very cool.

I saw one of these skimmers for the first time over at Derek's the other night (yes, I have not been getting out much...It sounds like there are a bunch of these around, but have not seen them yet). They look like cool skimmers.

How much do these cost? Is there a website or something with prices?
