OMG I'm freaking out

Some may remember my mysterious trouble with snails...

Well, tonight Sue gave me 3 nice turbos. I acclimated them slowly and put them in the tank. Happened to be watching Futurama when the lights in the tank went out (I'm normally up in bed by this time). Wandered over a few minutes later to check out the new snails and....

The biggest frickin crab I have ever seen was sneaking up on them.

It's red and very scary. The body is at least a silver dollar size. I shined a flashlight on him and he ran away.

Mystery solved. I have been providing a very expensive lunch for this guy. This tank has been running for 2 years and I've never seen him before tonight. I about had a heart attack.

Put the snails in the sump and looking for a DIY crab trap plan. I know what to use for bait Suggestions are welcome...

Robin

C'mon over, Graham! And I thought that bacterial infection was the only thing I had to fear in my tank!!

My pulse rate is still about 180.

Oh gawd Robin, that sounds like one big mean crab. Isn't it wierd he's been in there for all this time and you just spotted him? Creeepy!!! I hope you get some viable plans to get this big guy trapped!

Good luck,

Sue

You could relegate that little monster to your sump if you find a way to catch him. I think that he'd be cool to watch. Escargot anyone?

I used a mousetrap once to get rid of an acropora crab.

most of those crabs I've seen have been no bigger than an inch...you've been feeding him way too good Robin...hehe. I'll take it if no one else speaks for it. I've been planning on using a 20l for a mantis tank, but can't find a mantis shrimp around, so there's a good house waiting for him....

I glued some glass to the bottom so it would sink, and baited it with a prawn and a rubberband meant for orthodontic braces.

I have been told that if you put a tall glass standing upright, with bait in it, and set it so the upper rim is touching the rocks, that crabs will crawl in, but cannot crawl up the smooth sides to get out of the glass. a jar would also work. it is simple, and should work.

I am almost always interested in crabs an other misc inverts for the lab tanks. I have multiple compartments where it could live and not hurt anything. I'd love to have it if you can catch it.

Thanks for the idea of the glass. Will try it. Will give the crab to manderson, since he asked first (assuming I catch it). I have no desire to have this thing in my sump, I'm too upset with it right now. haha.

THANKS

Robin

ditto what happy said... get a glass stand it upright at the edge (cliff) of a rock so the crab has no issue getting in... to lure him try a piece of krill or something weighted down by something... it seems to do it after lights out is ideal. Good Luck!

Mike-
I once saw a mantis shrimp for sale at Premier Pets... you may want to give them a call.

Wow, I see the beginnings of a saga here, "Robin and Steve versus the Red Terror Crab".

This could be very interesting to follow! Keep us posted and I hope you can catch this guy quickly.
