This thing is definitely big enough to bar-b-que, but unfortunately I already promised it to Mike...

I can relate Robin.... I was having a problem with corals getting moved around and figured the turbos were pushing them off. Wasn't the turbos! Chromis and other small fish disapering, corals moving was a mystery. Sometimes when I don't have the time to mount frags I'll place them inside an "on the rocks" glass (short, wide mouth glass) and place the glass on the sandbed. I had some fairly substantial SPS frags that were each in the bottom of a glass at lights out and then half way across the tank in the morning. Last time I checked, SPS don't walk.
One night around 2:00 AM I got up for a glass of OJ and checked the tank with a flashlight. Discovered a 2 1/2" rock crab! (measured once I finally got it) I remembered finding a little crab that looked like a piece of live rock that I found in the bottom of the box when I originaly ordered my live rock. Figured free livestock and tossed it in the tank never to be seen again. 2+ years later, seen again, definatly bigger! Tried several things including the glass trick but no success at cathing it. Only way I got this thing out of the tank was when I moved and had to dismantle the tank. The back of the shell at the shoulders measured slightly more than 2 1/2", over 4+ inches between the claws. For over two years this thing was hinding in the rocks and only came out late at night.
I think the reason the glass trick didn't work on this monster was it could spread it's claws wide enough to not fit in the glass, same with a net when I tried late night hunting and spotted it out.
Happy hunting for yours.......
JJ

Hehe yea at Premier they have them all the time, just look in the compartments or in the live rock. They are 9.99 a piece. Also with the crab, you could place a turbo in there and hope it stays. I had the same issue way back in the day with this hairy white crab that snatched 5 of my snails.

JJ thanks for the story, I hope my experience is better than yours, cause I am not planning to rearrange this tank anytime soon!
I'll keep you all posted. First trap being set tonight!

I wish you the best of luck, Robin.
Unfortunately, I was only half kidding about the harpoon.
I know you PETA members will case on me about this... After exhausting more harmless methods persuing "evil" crabs, I have pushed a small nail through the end of a piece of slim PVC and done a little dirty work. One can only wake up to so many empty snail shells before they become a crustaciacidal maniac...
I do make sure that the inhabitants eat crab that evening, though... Fresh, too.

Yep, still here but nothing to report. I keep catching my brittle stars, but the big nasty won't take the bait. I haven't given up yet, and will post when there's more news.

Robin
We had a huge nasty crab at one point that was hard to catch also. What I did was tie a piece of plain floss around a piece of fresh shrimp I got at the seafood market. I placed it in the tank at night close to where I thought it was and waited for that bugger to come out. You can slowly pull the shrimp away from the rock and draw him out in the open where it will be easier to catch him. I have done this with BIG nasty bristle worms and it is kind of fun to taunt them with the food to get them all the way out and grab them with tweezers. I know that sounds a little demented but when you think about the torment they put us thru they earned it. So I wish you luck Robin, I remember many nights being up late crab/worm hunting. It helps if you have an assistant who can shine a red light where you need to free up your other hand. Happy hunting
