OK to split photo period?

I am fighting off HA so cut my photoperiod back from around 12 hrs to 10. (Also got a skimmer...more flow etc but that doesn't relate to my question.) We miss seeing the tank "awake" in the morning though. Is it a bad idea to set my timer to have the lights come on in the morning for a few hours then off for the afternoon and on again later in the day? I have zoo's and ricordia that I need to have enough "daylight" for.

I would live with it until your have licked your nutients situation thats fueling the hair algae. Once licked go back to your original lighting schedule, while I doubt it has a major impact by turning lights in the am, I would avoid.

probably not a huge problem w/ the split photoperiod, but not ideal. Try a fuge to get nutrient problem under control. Macro algae will out compete the hair algae for nutrients, and it will be gone in no time.

I am keeping zoas, ricordia, and LPS under PC lighting for only 5hrs a day. Just try cutting back your "on" cycle way back until the problem is under control.

Sounds good. Will have to look into a fuge and might as well have lights on even less since no one's there to enjoy anyway. Thanks again for the tips.
