Question

Noisy Overflow

I just set up my 55g AGA with Megaflow overflow. Everything is working fine, but i am getting spurts of noise through the durso type Megaflow. I plumbed 1-1/4 inch flexible hose to the sump for a drain line terminated with an elbow fitting. The hose runs parallel to the sump and drains under water level. I am using a Rio 2100 for a return pump. it runs quiet for the most part but i occasionally get a loud gurgle toilet flushing type sound where it sounds like my drain flow just doubled the drain volume for a few seconds. It seems pretty random. Any ideas on how to prevent this or any clue what I am talking about?

Thanks

Matt

hmmm do you have a lot of flow coming out of your return line, maybe try toning it down if it is a good amount with a valve that comes with it, sounds like it is gurgling trying to keep up.

Thanks Smeese

Yeah I thought about that. I read the overflow should handle 600gph and with my pump and calculated head loss I figured I was only getting about 450 or so with the Rio. Sure seems like that could be it though. I sure am getting a ton of microbubbles in the sump so I know there is lots of air going down the drain line.

You can make a type of stand pipe like this where the water is introduced to the sump.
That way you don't have the pressure of the water trying to push down into your sump water. I would hard plumb it!

My standpipe does have holes drilled in it Jerry. 2 in the sides and one breather hole at the top.

Looking at the picture you posted Superman are you just running a T fitting with the top exposed to atmosphere to allow air to escape? Is there any splash coming out the air end?

Thanks for your help guys.

You simply extend the T with some pipe high enough until you don't get splashing and then you put a sponge in the open end and you are set!

It’s the back pressure from the water going down the tube. The water is pushing too much air down and when it builds up enough pressure, you'll get the toilet flushing sound. Try putting the end of the tube above the water and that should stop. It’s the same thing as superman quoted. I had the same problem, now it’s gone after raising the drain pipe. HTH
