Nano filter

I am curious what filtration options there are for a nano tank. I am setting up 12g Aquapod and I dont have any filtration on it. I notice that the back could fit a filter pad or something or maybe a bag of activate carbon. What do you people do?

A five gallon bucket of premixed salt water is the only filter you need.

I don't know how big the compartment is in the back but in BJs nano were the back is too narrow for anykind of skimmer, I was very surpised at what some chaeto was capable of. Considerably reduced the amount of film on the front and the live rock which had some Hair on it from not being taken care of with the previous owner stabalized very quickly after adding the macro algae. The trick is to have some mechanical filtration pads between it and the return so if doesn't get introduced into the main tank for aethetic reasons.

I use live rock and then a bag of Chemi-pure. This stuff is awesome! OD sells it but you can also look for it at Dr.fosters. I use it in all of my tanks and it makes the water sparkle!

A couple of other tips:

I also used a piece of acrylic to plug up the bottom and mid level vents on the left leaving only the top over flow open. I did this to keep the film off the top of the water.

I also upgraded the fan system. I took out the original fan and replaced it with two Silenx fans that are quieter and have more CMF. I would go to http://www.nano-reef.com and do a search on Aquapod fan and you will see tons of experiences there.

If you have any other questions let me know!

i have been toying with tanks with internal sumps for awhile and i have generally shyed away from putting LR in the "sump" area...it tends to accumulate detritus which otherwise would be swept out of the system (might be sitting in the main tank being noticeable and looking ugly-so you suck it out).

i generally use only a powerhead for circulation and heater for thermal regulation, no mechanical or chemical filtation, and NO skimmer

Hey Derek, that is totally my fault, until I read this I forgot all about it, because I didnt use the sponge, it just seemed to make things worse, I just used carbon and a bag of those ceramic stones.

You have seen Rains tank. I doubt they (Li helps her out lifting the water up stairs), do a water change more than once or twice a month now that it is stable. Its just live rock and carbon bag. One chamber does have rubble, but you could probably forgo that.

My 5.5gal gets a weekly 1gallon change, and that is the only filtration that I usually do. Occasionally if there is a lot of debris I will throw a filter pad in just to catch the chunks of material, but remove it as soon as the water clears up so that it does not build up and get a chance to throw things out of whak. I leave the hang on the back run all of the time for flow, and have the heater and some live rock in it for a fuge.
