Looking for an SPS to try out.
Does anyone have a frag they would be willing to spare? Purple Acro? Green Acro, Birds nest? I want to try out the SPS stuff. Name a price or trade.

I'm sure someone has some nice digitata for you. Probably one of the easier SPS corals. Otherwise a green slimer would be the easiest acropora to care for.
Let me edit this to read: and be one of the easiest to obtain.

The green slimer can be easy, once it gets established (as is the case with the yongeis). I would think some of the thin branching stags would be some of the easier corals to keep. That, or else the LJ purple-tipped monster.

Under VHOs, your better off staying away from Acros. Experience tells me its not worth it. Stick with the Montis, Stylos, Seriotopias(Birdsnest), and Pocilloporas.
My first SPS(under VHOs) was purple Monti digi, which stayed brown, and then it was Red Digi(from Stan) and orange Monti cap, which did very well and stayed colorful. This was promising, so I tried three easy Acro frags, and they didn't do much except stay alive over the next 6 months.
Take Stan(Energy) up on his offer. He had a ton of nice Monti digis last time I saw the setup.

Did it make a difference if it was closer to the top of the tank?

The light intensity just isn't there. You can look at a VHO bulb and it's bright, but when you look at a halide it's blinding. Acro's need blinding light. The others mentioned will do fine at the top. Check out Jeremiah's SPS. I'm not keeping any of it. $10 a piece. For VHO monti's are the one thing I have that really maintain there beauty.

I had them at the top.
I think one of main factors in the MH v. Flourescents debate in regards to growing SPS is the fact that strip lights do not create shimmer lines, which are not just for aesthetics. They magnify the light substantially, some refer to it as "punching the light deep into the tank.". Just think of how bright they are at the bottom of a swimming pool, almost blinding, while the rest of the pool looks dimly lit while observing from underwater.
I had read in the past, in a Tyree article I believe, that in a tank with "normal" levels of surface agitation, the glitter lines pass 4-6x per second, giving the corals an approx. 250% boost in PAR for 1/12th of a second. This would suggest that they recieved as much as double the PAR due to glitter lines. I'm a little skeptical though. You decide.
