looking for a mantis...
hey folks-
i'm looking for a mantis shrimp for my new "barbie tank."
if you have any leads or pest shrimp let me know. i have also inquired about ordering one from tampa bay saltwater (live rock aquaculturers). i'm awaiting word from them about availability and whether they are willing to process such a small order but we'll see. they list a price of $9.95 plus a $9 box charge and prolly 30-40 for fedex overnight. but it may not be worth their time and effort. if anyone else is interested in picking one up let me know and i'd be happy to coordinate an order/update my order accordingly.
i axed them a few questions and i'm eagerly awaiting a response. i don't know exactly what to expect from them but the mantis sig forum at reefcentral would be a good place to search for info if you're so inclined!
thanks-
tg

As you know I am a summer off from having a mantis tank, but the peacocks look smashing (pun intended).

HFG,
Are you going to be keeping the peacock mantis in a sectioned off 20 gallon long? Do you know that peacock mantis shrimp can get up to 12 inches long?

hey devin get your -Gs straight
my barbie tank is small but it comes with the barbie ferrari so if the mantis is feeling a lil cabin fever he/she can go for a spin.
i'm NOT looking for a huge mantis-obviously it will grow but no matter my efforts i wouldn't expect it grow to such a size in captivity.
the tank will be a dedicated mantis haunt-only 12 x 12 x about 8H but it should be more than sufficient for a mantis lifestyle, even if it is a lil humble. humble roots you know! and a larger tank is never out of the question.
i'll even keep it purty with frags and macroalgae so he can do a lil decorating. the tank ( 3/8" walls ) fits immediately next to and above my sump in my stand. i'll post a pic when i get it fired up!

I was refering to HFG if you look in the post intro HFG he shows what his set up is going to be, and he has a 20 gallon long that he is going to section off and put a mantis, a decorater crab, and pod piles in it.
I wasn't talking about your tank TG. Oh yeah the barbie ferrari sounds like a good idea. If I was stuck in a box I would at least want to have a cool car in it. Hey you should also get one of those sponge bob square pants dolls so that the mantis has something to beat up.

no, I had no clue. Mantis is way down on the list, infact its off the list. Also I guess its lucky shipping companys SUCK (The bulkheads were told to be on the shipping truck on the fedx site yesterday, but no show); I found out that a 30g will fit through the side of my metal rack
When the time comes I will research the M shrimp and get the appropriate one, or none.
As of now the only thing that is a MUST in the tank is
hot looking coral of some sort and a Mandarin.
Everything else is filler IMO ( not to say the fillers won't be equally fun )

Sometimes when I get shipments of live rock there are mantis shrimp laying in the bottom of the box. There is also a lot of weird slug things, fireworms/bristleworms, and crabs, most of them are still alive when they come in. So if anybody wants a mantis or any other weird creatures I could probly just give it to you for free, if it is still alive.
