Best price I have found on the Ranco controllers is here for $129.95:

I bought mine from this place, except that I got the single stage controller (heater only). Current price on the single stage is $79.95.
Ryan.

i just figured it would be better to trade something than to pay cash for it. you have any pumps or 400w halides you looking to get rid of? other wise make me an offer on it.

Thanks spazz I think I'll pass, I'm still more in the research phase and looking at all the different options available.
Steve, it is all yours.

Ken, I can buy ranco single or double stage controllers from my work. These are commonly used in commercial HVAC installations so I'm not sure if the probe that comes with it is saltwater safe. I'm going to order one in the next week or two to test.
The only difference I can see from this unit and the ones you see being sold for aquarium use is that these are not wired up with plugins.
Does anyone know what the part number is on the saltwater safe probe to use with the ranco controllers?
Chris

Years ago, I did the DIY with the Ranco you ( Chris ) are planning to use. All you do is silicone up the temperature probe it comes with. Don't need to buy another version.
Later I did buy the aqualogic one which is OEM by ranco for the aquarium use it does come with the nicer titanium probe and the unit is totally sealed to prevent water damage, and you don't need to do any internal wiring/soldering. So for the non-DIYer the Ranco aquarium use ones may be worth the extra cost.
However, personally I would seriously consider getting a Reefkeeper I,II or Neptune AC Jr. as the cost of the dual stage is more than half the total cost of the others and can do much more than just a temp. controller.
Back when I purchsed the aqualogic those low-budget controllers weren't available. I have since bought both the original reefkeeper and the Jr. for other tanks and it well worth the extra money for all the additional features you get.
