Live Rubble

I just got a shipment of live rock today and was wondering, is it normal to have a significant amount of rubble in the bottom? I filled a 4 gallon bucked about half full with the stuff (it was a 45 pound box). And on a related note, does anybody need about a gallon and a half of live rock rubble?

Pretty normal.

Nice to have the rubble around for refugium and for mounting frags.

Also if during aquascaping and using plumbers putty to help get the rocks to fit together, you can stick some pieces of rubble into the exposed putty (before the putty fully cures ) to help hide the putty .....

Rubble also makes a great in-tank congregation/refuge area for pods.
I have 2 piles of rubble in my tank and at night, there are pods swarming all over them.
I can honestly say their populations increase quicker when I have used these piles...if that's something you desire.

If you decide to get rid of some of the rubble, I would be interested. How much do you want for it?

Someone else PM'd me just before you posted this. If that falls through or he doesn't want it all, maybe something like $1 a pound. It ends up looking like about a quart volume wise and maybe 10lbs though I haven't weighed it.

I got a shipment of live rock in that had obviously been dropped and about half of it was turned to rubble (the box was torn almost completely apart). I called immediately and got credit for half of what I paid for the LR INCLUDING half the shipping which was nice. I don't know if this would of happened had I not commented to the UPS guy to take note of it and followed up immediately. I assume if the box would of been whole, it would just have been considered normal shipping damage. What was the most upsetting was that it was one huge piece that had been totally broken up, I could tell that they had tried to ship me large pieces.

I keep a LR rubble pile in my tank as well, for pods and in case I need some for fragging. Like after I come back from a reef meeting, my cooler so full of the BEST frags from TCMAS members!

The box looked to be in good condition, and I suppose it didn't end up being "that" much. The box I got last week didn't have any to speak of so it seemed an excessive amount. The guy who sent me the rock said he was going to pick out some nice pieces for me because of some problems handling the order and there are two large nice looking pieces (not that I'd really know but they look nice to me) there are 5 or six smaller pieces that look nice as well and then a few fist fulls of chunks the size of my fingers. There was a fair amount (three or four cups) that was about pea sized that I just threw away.

Any ways, I just wanted to know if that was to be expected, the second batch of rock seems a fair bit more fragile (its also more interesting) so I guess it makes sense.

I have shipped LR twice from Walt Smith and it had no rubble at all, and I had to make some with a hammer for frag mounts.

I have seen pod piles acts as breeding grounds also.
