Live rock on PVC

Hello all. Brand new here. I am excited about finding a TC forum. I am in the process of setting up my first reef tank and have a question. I've read that people sometimes put their rock on top of PVC piping to elevate the rock and make more of it visible. Is there any other advantage to this as opppsed just setting the rock on tank bottom and then adding the sand? Does anyone recommend one or the other? Any feedback suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Shark,

Welcome to TRT.

One more thing I don't believe was mentioned in the article is the fact many of your critters (Satrs, gobies, etc...) can dig up the sand under the LR making it unstable. Putting the LR on PVC will help this. (I did not do this, and now wish I had.)

Yes, you want to put it on pvc. I usually cut 3 or 4" diamiater pvc into lengths that are just a little less than the planned height of your sandbed.

In addition, critters digging, circulation moving sand around etc. In years past have found the LR that was burried below the surface can look black and smell like rotten eggs when you remove the rock. Placing on pvc will eliminate this..
