Live Rock
I am new to the hobby and I have bought my first two pieces of live rock (Fiji Premium). Where is the best place to buy this and who has the best price?
I would also like to start out trying corals. From what i've read the Mushroom coral would be a good starter type coral....correct?

Yeah, pm Jerry (JnS) on the boards here. There are about 4-5 of us that are going to be getting some this next week sometime so it's a good time to get in on the rock.
BTW, Welcome to TRT.

Depends on what kinda live rock you want. For Fiji I would suggest Drs Foster and Smith for online suppliers. For Aqua-Cultured rock I understand Tampa Bay is top shelf too. If you watch Drs Foster and Smith...you can catch it on sale for about 89.00 to 99.00 for 40-45 lbs box plus shipping cost. I got my Kaelini live rock through them and was quiet pleased with it as well as the price.
The corals you start out with will depend upon many factors, lighting being the biggest one! But with decent lighting Mushrooms, Zoanthids, Leathers, Starburst Polyps are good first corals to take a shot at. Many of these can be quiet colorful and they are pretty hardy corals as well.

Thanks! I'll try to get PM Jerry. Any recommendations on where to get an inexpensive mushroom coral to start out?

kpax - if you don't even have rock yet, I wouldn't jump the gun with shrooms at this point. You need to give the rock time to cure before throwing anything else in the tank. There will be plenty of critters that appear out of nowhere once the rock goes in and has cured for a while.
Patience is a virtue in this game.

kpax - Just taking a shot in the dark here....you wouldn't happen to have been referred to TCMAS / this messaage board by a neighbor named Patrick, would you? I work with him, he lives in Savage, and has mentioned a neighbor who was just getting into saltwater w/ a 75 gallon setup.
A few ways to go for live rock - JnS is a good option, you can get in with a group order with people on this board (they seem to come around every few months), watch for "live rock for sale" posts on this board (again, seems they come around every couple of months as someone breaks down a tank or two), or you can order it online. Personally, I have had great success from www.liveaquaria.com . There are many online sites that are good for liverock. I'm sure some other folks here can provide additional ones that have been good for them. The LFS's are okay (SF and WoF), but tend to always be on the high end of the price scale.
How long has your tank been up and what type of lighting is on it? The soft corals like mushrooms are often less demanding / easier starter type corals, however they do still have minimum requirements for lighting and water parameters. Best bet to get a small group of starter mushrooms is from someone on this board - usually at one of the monthly TCMAS meetings, but frequently people trade & sell (or even give for free) frags inbetween the meetings as well.
Ryan.

order from premiumaquatics.com If weather it good and not too cold yet, you can get it shipped via UPS ground and save alot of money in shipping. Ground shipping gets here second day which is fine for LR. Only thing is that if do it this way, there is no quarantee it will arrive second day but even so, the rock would still be good...... just don't order where in transit would fall over the weekend....
Bill Brumucci did it this way for just about all of his rock for his 450g with no real incidents and can save hundreds in shipping costs....

Sorry --not that guy--I was referred to this site from a co-workers ex-roomate.
My tank has been set up for over a year with two blue Damsels. I have just recently added a yellow tang and two percula clowns. I took it slow this time--I've made the mistake before of rushing it--not a cheap mistake.

Hey kpax
Don't listen to a word Spindler says, he's full of it!!!
I think he showed you my web site. If not the link is below. I should be able to give you a few mushrooms corals, a little leather and maybe some Zoo's if you like. I might even have a rock that has all 3 on it that I could just give you. I'll have to check and we'll have to figure out a time to meet up.
http://www.neutechcentral.com/55soft.htm
p.s. Those pictures were taken shortly after everything was moved into it's new tank. The Leather is about twice that size now and ruler of the tank, leans against the front and back glass and is probably 18 inches wide. I think I could frag a piece off of it if need be but there are a few that have started randomly around the tank, I think from when I tore it away from the rocks it was attached to. Reminds me I need some recent pix to post.
