LFS Sadness

I just got off the phone with a person at a LFS. MY question was do you have 75 gallons reef ready aquariums in stock by AGA. She said we no longer carry them any more because they are unsafe for the fish. We recommend a protein skimmer instead. This could make RC's top 10 dummest things a LFS person has told you.

i hear ya. i have found that no matter what i am buying, be it fish, corals, equipment, home electronics, or even cars if you have done any research at all on what you are looking for there is an 80% chance you know more about the product than the person selling it to you.

LOL that's funny. You should call back and talk to the owner and tell them that....

I’m guessing it was a world of fish. I had a similar incident, but most LFS are like that.

That is amazing. Granted I have heard some pretty dumb questions from customers. If I ever hear one of the employees saying something stupid I do my best to correct them, but that isn't even related. It doens't really matter what store it was. Always do your research and keep in mind some LFS employees really do know their stuff. However most people that come in don't know much and store employees are there to help. Most individuals in this club know more and shouldn't expect their LFS to have all of the answers.

ROTFLMAO!

I consider myself having maybe medium (at most) knowledge of all things marine, but I know there's been times where I'm just laughing on the inside at what they are telling me at a LFS. Never quite this bad though!

What's even more fun for me is going to any local store that sells computers/parts and having them give me product "advice". I've yet to really glean any useful information out of a salesman. I usually nod, snicker quietly while they spew their salesman BS and then tell them I'm going home to put it into the PC I built myself then proceed to waste more of their time by shooting holes in their "advice" until they get fed up and leave me alone.

That's the problem with getting advice right from the retailer. Their knowledge tends to either be inadequate, inaccurate, or tainted to get you to buy something. Some people are blinded the income, while others are just plain ignorant.

Civil is right on. He is one of the trustworthy LFS guys...as are a few of his co-workers. My dumb questions are a challenge for them. I bet on the inside they are busting at the seams to give me an answer like they. Fortunatly for me they don't.

After all the years in this hobby if there is one thing I learned it is to do my research first, then go to the LFS, and then do more research.
One of the best resources available is this club. I have found more first hand experience from people who you can trust, who really care and want to help you be sucessful, in this club then anywhere else.
