Input: Fish compatability help wanted.
Okay I have always liked the looks of Blue Damsels, or even the Yellowtail Blue Damsels. I see they are labled "semi-aggressive" and I hear people have hard times with damsels being mean. I have a 3 Stripe Damsel already that is labled"aggressive" and gets along fine with everyone in my tank, at first it didn't like the 6 Line Wrasse, but after a few days, it was all good. It had no problem adapting to 6 Chromises, prolly cause my Clown made instant friends and would chase the damsel if it tried or ever tries to pick on a chromis.
Anyhow, think I could peacefully add a couple blue damsel or yellowtails to my 90 without them being mean?
Oh I would also like to add a bi-color psuedochromis or Royal Gramma sometime too.
Thanks,
-Skip

Blue damsel might not be aggressive towards other fish but will be towards its own species. I used to have two in a 55 reef which was one of the worst mistakes I made (besides a diamond goby). I ended up giving them to a friend after all the frustration they cause me. Just my bad experince with blues damsel. They do make great fishes for cycling though.

I just got rid of a blue damsel because it was so aggressive towards a new kole tang. I would avoid them myself, especially if you plan on having anything else in the tank other than damsels. Just my 2 cents.

I did the typical "cycle your tank with a couple damsels" thing when I set up my 75. They were yellow-tailed, and boy were they aggressive. Actually, the larger one was real agressive (towards anything in the tank, especially towards the smaller one). I caught them and brought them back to the LFS when the larger one was kicking everyone elses butt. I unfortunately put both of them together in a small container and the larger one beat the crap out of the little one and killed it before i could get them back to the store. I wish I would have kept the small one, but I can't tell how dominant it would have become. I will never keep another damsel in one of my tanks. They are cool fish, but they are so agressive (the large one also beat up a royal gramma I had as well), and that's why I got rid of them. If you have fish that can keep them in line, then they may not be bad.
FWIW, YMMV,

I also cycled with 2 cheap yellow tailed damsels and ended up returning one to the store. Yep, the big one killed a smaller one. This might be where rule #3 comes in.

I had a problem with 2 yellow tailed damsels harassing my emperor angel stressing him out greatly. Had to tear things down to catch the buggers. I then put them in my old roommate's tank where he was better equiped for them.

I've got you all beat. I still have three dominos and a three strip in my tank. I've had them for a few years and they have gone from about nickel size to three inches. They are going to coming out though as I know some people that want to cycle new tanks and the largest domino is becoming very agressive. For now though, it's more territorial.

Hmm so sounds like I'll find something else. I am glad that my 3 Stripe is very good in my tank, I think there is a heirchy going on in there and everybody respects everyone else.
Thanks for the input.

I've seen Saddleback and F. perc in Dwaynes tank get along. I've seen tomato and f. perc in my other friends tank get along. The usual problem is long term success. I do believe your tank is too small to try and host multiple pairs.

I don't have multiple pairs. I have 1 False Perc, so I'd like to get another clown, thinking of mating the False Perc, but I really like the looks of a Saddleback, or a Toamto.

I've got a False Perc & a Tomato. They get along most of the time, although the Tomato is usaually the aggressor when there not getting along. They are in a 90, so there is enough room, I wouldn't want them together in a small tank.

I had a yellow and blue damsel that were fine together, but once I placed a clown in there with them, it was a tag team on the clown.
Now I still have the blue, and just bought a new clown, but made sure I picked one out that was quite a bit larger than the damsel, no probems so far!

2 yellow damsels and a blue damsel... plus a Tomato clown and a pair of FP.
All seem to get along. Sometimes they chase each other after I feed them but that's about it.
The damsels usually go after a newcomer in teh tank but only for a little while. Then everything calms down.
So, no problems to report from here
