I need your $0.02 about an overflow...
Now that all of my night classes are done my boyfriend and I are going to start our "winter break" project...
Drilling a 55g tank & creating a new stand for it that can house a sump.
Please... I need your help/opinions!
Does anyone know of a good place to get a premade overflow box?
Is is better to get one that goes the full height of the tank?
or just a little box near the top?
are there benefits to one type over the other?
I have been checking out the DIY archives, and I don't think I want to mess with making one. But if anyone has any simple plans, I am open to those too...
Also, any suggestions for returns/pumps to use would also be helpful.
Any Info would be helpful! Thank you!
-Carrie

Greg, geshields, could probably build you one. He does excellent work and is very fairly priced.

You will have to drill the back of the tank. The bottom is most likely tempered, thus it cannot be drilled. Greg makes very good boxes but get it drilled over at SF. They have the correct bit and drill. Then silicone the box on, holding it with a large clamp. You can drill a return hole, but it is really not that big of a deal.

The best part is Rich can even do it for you He did mine and shattered my tank! LOL j/k he did a nice jo with the help of his associates. Also the 30 does include a bulkhead. Another nice feature of going to something fishy is Greg lives nearby so you can easily pick up your overflow. I had one build by him and it is excellent.

There are members of the club which will drill holes for much cheaper, but with no guarantees if the tank shatters (dunno if STF guarantees against this). Usually it can be coordinated to be done at a meeting, or sooner if it really needs to be done.

i think when i called around a few months ago about drilling holes no fish store in the twin cities will guarantee it. i ended up drilling 3 holes myself. at least my fate was in my own hands.

No one has mentioned if one type of overflow is better than another or not... full tank depth or the little box type...
Should that make me assume they are created equal?
I like the look of the full depth corner ones, but I am not sure if they are really better or right for my tank.
Any thoughts?

Only thing that matters is the part with the teeth. That plus the size of bulkhead will determine how much flow it can handle. The depth in your case doesn't matter. Typically the tall ones are when you drill the bottom which doesn't apply to you.
If you like the look go for it, otherwise no advantage....

If you want to do it yourself all you need is a Dremel and a diamond bit. I enlarged my hole in a 90 this way, one hole was for a 3/4" and I made it so both are 1". It takes about 1 hour if you take your time and do it right and then all you need is a bulkhead and a overflow.
If you want a 75 JnS has some already drilled with bulkheads.
