Hydor rotating water deflector review.

It's awesome, a little noisy so you don't want it in your bedroom, but not so noisy that I don't want another one.

Dirk, put me down for three more for next month's meeting.

Mike, how does the deflector work? Does it is deflect water from the pump in different directions on it's own?

the water flow through the power head drives some plastic gears in the attachment, automatically rotating it. The design also seems to deflect water out around the powerhead and delivers a more broad stream of water. $12, you can't beat it. I've been trying to think of something to diffuse the water for quite some time. Corals seem to really like it. Even if it doesn't last long, I'll just buy another.

Loud eh? Mine is whisper quite. You should check yours out for problems or something. Those little gears shouldn't be making a sound.

Noisy in that I wouldn't want it next to my bed as some have the reef tank in a bedroom and ANY noise is a factor. I think with any other room you prolly wouldn't notice it, but at night when all is quiet....

I dunno. I just turned off my lights for a sec to see if the fan(noisy as hell) was masking any sound made by my Hydor. It does make a low humming noise. My lights cover it up, but its nothing too bad.

It also cuts down the flow some, which is to be expected by its design I suppose.

I give it a 8/10. I'd buy it again, just wish I had it on a Maxi 900 not a 600.

What does it do for flow rate? I heard that it could slow it down?

Flow rates depend on the size of the Hydor. There are 3-4 different sizes I believe. I don't know how much it hinders the flow rate as I have no way to measure it.

Mine are 1200's so the new flow is a welcome change. It's kind of "vented" to allow the extra flow resistance to dissipate around the unit. Hard to describe, but I don't think you really lose any GPH, but rather it gets spread out more.

Hydor totating deflectors

Hi Mike will have them for you at the next meeting. There has to be some loss of flow, it takes energy to make the gears work and make it rotate. I am not an engineer, I know it is called ......something

Appears the loss is very minimal which is GOOD!

A LFS in BP uses them on many of his tanks. They work good, but are a bit bulky looking IMO. If I had a bigger tank I would consider one or two. He just suggested to clean them occasionally to keep them free of gunk.

OK, there prolly is some flow loss, but not enough to really matter if you are using a 1200. I would bet a 900 would be the same result. Just seems to be an inexpensive way to go and have a low replacement cost.
