HOw important is an overflow?

Is it possible to just angle the pvc tube up at the top of the water from the bulk heads (a few inches underwater), and use a screen fittingfor the end?

An overflow in my opinion is a must, it does the job of directing as much surface skimmed water to the sump as possible for it to be skimmed. Without overflows there will be eddying areas of oils and scum that never make it to the skimmer. I had Spazz make my overflow box, he did a great job and for a fair price. The longer (horizontally) the overflow the better.

PM spazz for a price, my overflow was of a custom design, and for a 220 gallon tank, so the cost of an overflow for your tank would be completely different I am sure.

supermans design is internal but works in the same way.

Yes it can be done that way. However, If you go to the trouble to drill or get drilled you might as well go the extra mile and do with an overflow box. You won't get max flow and impossible to keep from gurgling noise. With a strainer on it you do have to keep it clean regularly. You would for sure need two of them for redundancy. My first 90g was that way but no tank since ( about 6 different ones ) has been that way.
