You could also use a sensor switch in place of a float valve. But you posed an interesting question so I had to go down and try it on my system. I have an auto shut-off but never used it. The system will shut off once it fills all of the housings and pressurizes your system with a float valve. When the auto shut-off activates it shuts off the feed and waste water flow.
Now it is not a good system for auto top off unless you have the up most faith in your float valve. Part of the failure problem with float valves is when they are poorly secured so they tilt or flip and do not shut off the water. My system makes about 28 gallons over a 10 hour period so I run it over night and manually turn it off in the morning.
