Fuge In Sump

I am in the process of setting up a 75 gallon with a 20 high sump. I want to add a fuge to the system and was thinking of putting it in the sump. How I plan on doing this is the tank will drain into a PVC t and split off one drain to the fuge that will be propped up in the sump about 4 inches. The other drain will go into the main portion of the sump. The drain to the fuge will have a ball valve to adjust flow. The tank I am going to use for the fuge is a 5 gallon tank. The water will overflow the sides of the five gallon tank into the sump to be returned to the tank. Did I confuse ya? What are your thoughts on a setup like that?

What are you usuing the fuge for? If you are usuing it to grow macro algae then I would just have it gravity feed back into the sump. but if you plan on usuing it to grow pods ect., then I would have the fuge gravity feed right back into the display tank. Instead of it feeding back into the sump, so that the pods don't get chewed up by your return pump.

Useing it for macro and pods. As far a the siphon goes I don't see how it would siphon any more than the drain line into the sump would? The refugium will constantly be overflowing water into the sump.

fuge

Put the skimmer upstream from the fuge. After that put the fuge wherever after that. After the skimmer don't worry about it. Plankton shear/ Impellor shear Don't worry about it.

That is exactly what I am going to do. (drawing and skimmer placement upstream.)

Brian, is your fuge on the right in the photo? In that case...is your return pump being put in the center of the sump?

going to be drain line into the left side of sump with the skimmer on the left side. Then return pump in the middle then fuge on the right side of the sump.

My sump is setup the same as Brian's... My decision to put the skimmer and fuge NOT in-line with each other is so that the fuge doesn't become worthless by having to high of a flow rate through the sump. For macro algae to be efficient in soaking up nutrients it needs to have a long contact time with the water.

I was told as low as you can get it & still have some type of flow will make it most effective. I copied my sump from a bunch on RC & from http://www.melevsreef.com

Others run theirs will the entire sumps flow going through it & will tell you that's the way to go. It's one of those things where opinions differ.
