Friendly Reminder: Avoid Disaster!!
Woke up this morning to my wife telling me to get out of bed...the tank shut off as well as the refrigerator. She said that it had only been off for about 15 minutes because she heard it running when she first got up. The C/B popped on the main panel, no big deal so I reset it. Everything comes back on except my main return pump. An Iwaki 30RLT. I feel it and it is humming but not spinning. It is extremely hot to the touch. I place a 10" room fan on it to cool it down. Meanwhile, I rig a Mag pump up to get water from sump to tank...About 15 minutes later, I plug the Iwaki back in. Still only a hum...
I detach the pump from the tank and the sump. I disassemble it and this is what I see...

If you look closely at the 1st picture and the swirl marks up top, you can see the rotation of the impeller and the calcium deposits that seized the pump.

tsk, I put down the laptop, then realized I saw an ebay item for an impeller and full assembly for 5.00 (so far and closes in 1 hour) so I went back to check..
its an 20RLT, yours a 30
anyone interested http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=46312
thought would be nice to have a backup, just swap and soak the offending impeller for a day or so.

Whew! Nice catch. I wonder if that's why my pump is so darn loud.

crap building up
This actually has been happening to a quite a few in the area, besides not starting, also blowing breakers, sparks everywhere....Whether its the slime, crud, calcium deposits I am just as quilty as most of us were too busy, forget, don't care or will get around to it next week/month.....
The last pump I had that did not work the sponge inside the grid part was hard as a rock, NO wonder it didn't work. I have not checked them since.....almost a year ago.....I'm busy cleaning tonight!!! Like a lot of things, it is just getting back to the basics.
Thanks Greg, glad to see you didn't have a mess, but who is next!!!!

That is a very good point. With that in mind we should consider showing our significant others what to do in the event of a pump failure or have them put an SOS out on this site for someone to come help... That could have been a complete disaster in my house if it happened. My wife would not have had a clue what to do, even if I explained it to her. The only thing I would be able to do is have her put out a request for help on this site.
