Fitting Question

Does anyone know what the fitting used as the removable cap is called? I've been searching trying to figure it out, but have come up with nothing. It looks like some sort of union. Maybe Greg can chime in since this is his reactor.

Confused, is that sealed at the top, or is it open? I assumed it was closed and it was a twist of cap to add kalk easily.
