Finally figured out mysterious problem...

Hi all, here's a story about troubleshooting:

I have a little 26 gallon nano at my office. It was doing great until about 2 weeks ago, and it started looking unhappy. Mushrooms were wilted, clam not opening fully, hair algae and dino bloom. I am METICULOUS with water changes, checked all parms, etc... and could not figure it out at all.

I work about 8:30 to 5-ish, and my lights are on a timer. They come on before I get there and go off after I leave. Monday, I came in very early, and the lights were on. Whaa??!! I checked and the autotimer was STUCK with the lights on. Have no idea how long this was happening.

Poor little corals weren't getting any sleep. I fixed the timer. Today, everything is happy and beautiful again, with no other changes needing to be made.

FWIW,

Robin

I love how a 26g tank is considered "small." Betchya that makes Twins Guy feel pretty inferior with his 30g full size reef.

Actually, Rich has a very nice setup.

I get a kick out of this tank size thing too...

When I was a kid my dad had two 10 gallon (or 5 gallon?) and two 15 gallon tanks that I think had been set up before I was born, and a very old 2.5 or 5 gallon tank with a sort of ornate metal frams (I still have guppies descended from the fish my dad had in these tanks).

Then when I was in about 4th or 5th grade my dad got a 20 long that some neghbors were throwing out in the alley. We thought it was huge...I can't tell you how exciting it was when this got set up in our dining room right by the table we ate at, and was stocked with fish like angels, gouramis, tetras, fancy guppies, and several baby walking catfish (very cool fish by the way...we had one of them for quite a few years...too bad they had to be banned!)! Then a collection of 20 highs and other 20 longs (and lots of other smaller tanks) followed, and then we had my brother-in-law's 45 for a few years while he was in the army (with his oscars, severums, silver dollars, large plecostomus and a largemouth bass that we added). The 45 and its large inhabitatants seemed like the ultimate in aquarium-keeping.

Now multiple 40 breeders, 50 breeder, and 65s seem just ordinary, my 70 seems not quite big enough, and I find myself wondering whether I could fit a 200 or 300 gallon tank in my basement someday (and whether I could afford it...or have the time for it!) And then of course, what would go in it?....reef? ...fish only with the triggerfish I'd love to keep or the queen angel my daughter wants?... that ultimate amazon tank with angels and tetras I've long dreamed of?...a brackish habitat with archers, mudskippers, and fiddler crabs? (hmm...maybe we need several 200 gallon tanks!...and a different house to hold them all)!

Its funny how perspectives change, and how easy it is to get sucked into always wanting more!
