I have been a devoted Canon user for 20 years. I have a 10D and love it. The 20D is the best bang for the buck and the lens selections can't be beat in my opinion. My wife is a professional photographer who had always used Nikon until she met me. She said she'll never go back now that we have the 10D.
Hope this helps Jerry.

I'm not a pro and haven't used an SLR, but I too prefer Canon.
I've bought my last few cameras from www.beachcamera.com
They have great prices. I have read that others have had issues of getting a hard sell, but I order online and have neve had any issues. I've bought a G2, G6 and my new video camera from them.

I still need to buy a tripod for my shaky hands though. And im still playing around with the features. I should have some update pics soon.

Canon 20D
Really great image quality. Fast startup times. Lots of manual controls. High ISO quality is really good which is great for photographing tanks (All of which are relatively Dim).
Most important thing to think about when purchasing a SLR is that the most expensive body will produce worse photos than a cheap rebel with a good lens and flash. It's better to spend less on the body and get good lenses, flash, flash extension, and remote shutter. I think these accessories are 100% necessary for good coral photography.
I'll have the D20 and some of the accessories i talked about at the meeting tonight if you want to talk about them.

I have the Canon 10D with the IS/USM lens. It helps a ton with shaky hands and such. I have been using close-up filters on my lens instead of a mcaro lens, but will be adding the macro lens soon.

This may not apply to cameras but from the world of microscopes, I assume the facilities to manufacture optics may be shared between the groups. There are essentially only four manufacturers of quality optics world-wide, Olympus, Nikon, Ziess and I forget the name of the other swiss/german company. Everything else uses substantially lower grade optic components. Of course it's not as important in a camera as a microscope where everything is "magnified" no pun intended, but I'd feel better about knowing the optics are good.
Despite this there's also a good chance that on the entry level cameras even these manufacturers use lower grade parts from other suppliers.
Just some data points to consider.
