Search for Randy Holmes Farley and 2 part. He has a complete article on the how's and why's of the 2 part. It's a relatively simple read and really good for background. Err nevermind I found it. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...l2004/chem.htm

Bake it. Why? Because Randy sez so.

There's a good reason as to why...but I'm being attacked by my tweo kids...

It comes down to this. If you want the two part to help keep your PH high then bake it, the baking soda portion that is
. If your PH stays where you want it without the two part don't worry about it.

32. Why do some aquarists bake baking soda in a kitchen oven at 300° F for one hour prior to use?
A. The baking releases water so that the remaining solid is more potent at boosting calcium in the aquarium.
B. The baking releases carbon dioxide so that it raises both pH and alkalinity in the aquarium.
C. The baking releases carbon dioxide so that it raises pH without raising alkalinity.
D. The baking releases water so that it has a pH lowering effect on the aquarium.
E. The baking converts sodium carbonate into sodium bicarbonate, which then allows it to boost alkalinity in the aquarium.
Answer 32. Baking baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) drives off carbon dioxide and water and leaves sodium carbonate:
NaHCO3 à Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2
That process is used by aquarists who want to boost alkalinity and pH. Before baking, it raises alkalinity, but has a very small pH lowering effect in seawater. The correct answer is B.

Guys 300F for one hour will not do it all the time.

You need to preheat the oven to 400F and it's two hours. Just spread it thin on a pyrex baking dish.

I showed Randy this when he was telling everyone to buy Washing Soda. People could not find Washing Soda without perfume in it and were shipping it all over the country to each other. I told him there was no reason to tell people to do all that when they can just make it.

Photographers that work with film do this all the time. It's what they need to fix their film when they are developing it.

I tried to Google it for you guys but I guess no one is developing film any more or I don't know the right search words.

I did find this:
