Clean-up crew

Looking for some ideas for spiffing up the clean-up crew in our 55. We are down to 3 turbo snails and 5 reef crabs. Detritus and junk build up in/on the sand seems to happen fast, driving more water changes with the siphon trying to suck the crud out. Don't mind doing water changes regularly, but would like to avoid siphoning the sand all of the time.

I know many people like to increase flow to prevent the build up. We already have 2 powerheads running, on top of the Rio 2100 that powers our sump & return. Don't really want to add more powerheads, and drilling / external plumbing is out of the question for now.

Brittle or sand sifting type stars maybe? More crabs and/or snails? Conch's? Would be interested in the above is someone has some for sale (sorry, no frag's to trade with). Even if you don't have anything to sell, any insight, suggestions, and sharing your experience is encouraged & welcomed .

Ryan.

Conchs and stars are a good way to go. If you get a brittle star make sure it is not a green one. As you can see in my avatar I really enjoy my brittle. I think they make a very interesting addition to a reef...that for me has been very reef safe. The only time I see trouble is one of my large hermits fight the star for a piece of krill...basically the crab will grab on to the krill that the star is trying to pull into his mouth...then the star will start swinging the crab around...it really quite comical.

Ahh yes, bristleworms.. ..rounded up a bunch of them one night a few weeks back, and sacrificed them to the ceramic whirlpool. Thought there were too many in the tank at the time. There are still a number of them in there, we just have to search a bit more with the flashlight to find them. Perhaps we should have left them all alone.

I do think we want to try out some brittle starts and conchs. Reef safe is a must, even though we only have a few small corals & an anemone with the fish.

Yes, leave the small bristle worms alone. They are good, and you can't have too many. FYI, I plan on ordering some clean up critters from JnS--a bunch of snails, anyway--astrea and cerith, maybe some nassarius. Not a big fan of hermits, except for the scarlet reef. Will probably get some cucs as well.

I like the Coral Banded Shrimp. He helps with the detritus and keeps the brisstle worm population low.

Been trading some PM's with JnS myself too. Very likely we will get some stuff from him. The only crabs we have are the blue legged and scarlet reef ones too. No "big mean" ones.

Coral banded shrimp, hmmmmm, would it get along with my cleaner shrimp?
