Depends on the species of clam. Maximas and croceas like a lot of light, while some of the others handle less.

One of the former members of TCMAS raised a gigas and two derasas for about 4.5 years in a 180 with just two 175 W MH plus two NO fluorescents (I think he was using 2 shop light bulbs, or something similar). The clams all started out at about 3" and the gigas is now approaching 2 feet long and the derasas are quite large as well (though obviously much smaller than the huge gigas). Very impressive growth, with less light than I would have imaginined necessary (I now have these 3 clams in a 220 lit by two 400W MH...probably more light than they actually need I suppose (???)).

I have a maxi and a squamosa under 2x150HQI and 1 96w actinic and both are growing and doing fine. They are in a 92gal bow front corner at the bottom of the tank.
