Can I drill a Top Fin 29?

I am going to build a new sump using a 29 gallon tank. The cheapest 29 I have found is the "Top Fin" brand at Petsmart. (About $36). Anyone know if this is tempered? No one at Petsmart knows, and I can't find anything on their website. I noticed some of the bigger Top Fin tanks had "Tempered - Do Not Drill" stickers on the bottom, but no stickers on the 29's. BTW, I'm drilling one side, not the bottom.

I wouldn't think the sides would be tempered. Even on the tempered All Glass 75's, isn't it just the bottom that is tempered?

Are you talking about the 75E... that's just the bottom.

Personally, I wouldn't try it without confirmation. There are cheaply built tanks out ( Topfin is a prime candidate ) that use tempered all the way around 55g tanks in particular.

What about All-Glass 29's, I thought they were only tempered on the bottom. The All-Glass is only about $15 more.

I could not find the specs on the All-Glass website just this in the FAQ's:

Can I drill holes in my aquarium for external filters? Maybe, many of our aquariums are made with tempered glass in the bottom. Tempered glass cannot be drilled. Non-tempered glass panels may be drilled by a qualified technician. In some cases, you may special order All-Glass aquariums pre-drilled with the MegaFlow or Twin-Flow overflow systems. You could also special order, in some cases, an aquarium with non-tempered glass if you wanted to have it drilled outside of our facility. If you have an older tank that you want to drill, don’t take any chances - if you are not sure that the glass is non-tempered, do not drill it.

I would think you would have no problem with that. call forest lake pets, they always have used drilled tanks 651-464-8982 talk to Martin

On the website it's under services, then technical information. It says it doesn't have a tempered bottom... It doesn't say anything about the sides.

The TopFin tanks are not tempered at that size. I work at PetSmart so i can tell you that for sure. TF is actually made by Perfecto.

That's good enough for me. Thanks.

What happens if you try to drill tempered glass?

It explodes into tiny pieces and you have a mess and risk of injury. I drilled a AGA 29 w/o problems.

I drilled my 29g All Glass on the side, so I know they're not tempered. Can't remember if the bottom had a tempered sticker or not, but I don't think it did.
