Building a fan set up
Have any of you built your own fan set ups? Where did you get the fans if you did? Can you share pictures of your set up?

I'm talking more about the computer fans on the hood with the 12 volt power supplies. Where do you get these around here and how do you know what power supply to go with?

I am going to let some one with more experience answer this. But, I would start scavanging old cd players, scanners or any other electronic stuff you might really be needing to throw away anyhow. I think any 12v will do.... I know for sure Clownnut knows the answers to all your questions. He is back in school again though

You can buy them at compusa, circuit city, or radio shack. Comp usa has the best selection. If you need a power supply you can get that at radio shack too. Just get the one that is around 20 bucks and it can power 4 4inch fans without issue. HTH

A great source for fans and power supplies is Ax Man on University Ave. Dirt cheap and they have all sorts of sizes.

I went with this unit on ebay--It should be quiet and move some air.

Thanks for the input.

I'm not sure if it's the best or cheapest, but I bought the fans from radio shack and bought the plug in converters that matched up with them. I think they were three inch fans. I can't remember what it cost at the time. I installed an exhaust fan that I hardwired to a timer to go on and off every six hours. Fans make such a huge difference on temp...

It is very Dirk-esque. They have every thing from parachutes to bed pans! It is 1/2 block west of Snelling on University avenue. Not really buyer beware, but know what you need if your getting electronics!

How big are the parachutes, I might need one.
Is it a big place? I'm going to head there tomorrow.

I'm not formally trained on this stuff, so the following is offered without any expressed or implied knowledge of the topic at hand.
The fans will typically list the voltage and amps required. Being DC power you don't "have" to use the exact same voltage power supply(a.k.a. transformer), but you should for safety. And you shouldn't speed either...
Just make sure the power supply is rated for enough amps to cover all of the fans you hook up to it.
For example:
You have 3 fans that are 12V DC at .4 amps each
You need a 12V power supply rated at 1.2 amps
You can technically run more, but the power supply will run hot and I think the fans won't run at the same speed either.
