Be careful when diving
I guess this should probably read, don't provoke an animal with big teeth in its home, ya dumba**. Even though it wasn't provoked, I guess you shouldn't feed the animals for the next schmuck who is going to go diving.

Very true, what do we do when we have people invading our homes, he did nothing but what we would have done.

Our divemaster in Belize had this exact thing happen to him about ayear before we dove with him. He is very lucky to be alive and had to be airlifted from the dive site to an ER in Belize City - the boat ride was too far and he would never have made it. IIRC - The moray was one he was used to feeding on previous dives and apparently was agitated that day. The divemaster was trying to lead the moray away from the dive group because it was circling them when he was attacked. Sounds pretty simliar to the story in Cuba.

Don't have time to read it but looking at those pics, wow, those things can do some damage. Looking at the preop picture that had to sever a large chunk of the nerves to the hand. After a year he still can't make a fist, any idea if that's from muscle tissue still recovering or nerve problems?

I can belive that happening too.
While snorkeling in Hawaii this past summer. I came upon one of these, with my brother as we were exploring the reef at hanauma(sp?) bay. We were a little farther out in the reef in the little bit more advanced section, were we could swim down 7-8 feet and look at the sides of the enourmous structures. And out poped the head of one of these guys, mouth wide open. Luckily he just stuck his head out, and didnt try to attack us. But it still scared us.

Sad story! Thanks for sharing it. Just goes to show that animals really are animals and, we really do need to use more caution. I think humans get placid in the underwater world thinking that it's a safe, peaceful place to be... wrong. We all forget that everything has it's place; sometimes we need to keep our distance.
