Bangaii with Eggs

Awhile back, we got a juvenile pair of Bangaiis from 'mmclain'. Well they have grown quite a bit since then and today I noticed that one of them has a mouth full of eggs. He kinda keeps his mouth open while he swims and his lower part of his mouth is quite large so I am thinking he must have quite a few in there. While I was watching him....he must have coughed or choked because one of the eggs came flying out of his mouth and landed on a rock. Does anyone know if there is something special I should be doing with them?

Well first, CONGRATS!!

A couple of things to note.

First, since this is probably the first holding and the pair you ended up wih is pretty young, don't be surprised if he doesn't hold to term. In fact, this may happen a few times before he actually holds all the way to the end.

There really isn't too much for you to do at this point other than to keep an eye on him. Once he does hold full term, he should release the babies just after lights out, or at least within a couple of hours.

Now you have to figure out what you want to do. If you do nothing and leave the babies in your reef, they will most likely become reef food for eveything else.

If you want to raise them, you need to remove them from the tank. Some people have luck remiving Dad just before he releases. Depends a lot on the Dad. Mine always seemed to release about the time they saw the net so I had to catch them anyways and it ended up being stresful for everyone involved.

If you catch them, you will need live baby brine to feed for at least the first few days. You should be able to wean them onto frozen brine and mysis within the first week to 10 days though. The sooner the better as brine are a biut of a pain and unless you fortify ro feed right after hatching, they don't have much nutritional value.

Remember that the male will probably end up holding within a few days after he releases. This gives him a short window to catch up on eating. Make sure you feed him well. Watch out though as your water quality can go downhill fast if you end up with a lot of un-eaten food.

Again, congrats. You might want to do a search over on RC for how to raise BC's......lots of info. Feel free to ask here as well as there are a number of us who either currently raise or have raised BC's in the past.

Thanks Mike!!

Yeah, I figured that since it was their first time with the eggs that they would not survive....but I thought I had better find out just in case they did. Yesterday his mouth was pretty plump full of eggs and the female was very protective of him. She would swim at his side all day and she always seemed to get between him and the glass as if she did not want me looking at him. And I noticed that she had a slight reddish tint to her (does that mean anything?)
I wasn't able to keep an eye on them last night....and this morning I noticed that he was no longer carrying them. And the funny thing was, the female wanted nothing to do with him today....she stays far away from him as though she is mad at him

I was wondering how long they carry the eggs in their mouth if they do carry to full term??? Is it just a few days???

Thanks so much for the info on them!!

Kim,

Yep, I had a couple of females that used to seem pretty mad when the male didn't do his part. Don't worry, she won't stay mad for long and before you know it, he will be carrying again. You should take this opportunity to feed him well.

He should carry for about 3 weeks or so. Some will hold a little longer. Most of my males would try and get away from the female when they were ready to release.

Are you planning on setting up a seperate tank for the babies? You can also get away with one of those mesh breeders that hangs inside the tank although they will outgrow it pretty quick. Also, it's one more source of heavy, nutrient rich feeding that could potentially cause other problems in your main tank. Something to think about.

Good luck and let us know ho it's going.
