Bad Review for Ebo-Jager

I am posting this because I bought an ebo-jager 200w heater. It is the non-submersible one. Anyways it says it heats up to 93 degrees. So I set the thing for 77. It says it won't sway more than a degree. I come home to discover that my tank is 105. That is without and lights or anything. So I dump ice into the tank. All the ice is gone in about 2 minutes. Now I start to check out the heater. I start turning it down until the light goes off. Then I turn it up again to see where it was set at. It was then 95 degrees in the tank and the light turned back on at 73. I thought these were suppose to be great heaters. So now I plugged it into my DARK controller and the temp probe comes out only to heat the water up again. I plan on returning it.

Jake,

I have had a 250W ebo-jager for years with no problems, but your story is scary as h*ll. Why were you not running the heater through the reefkeeper?

I had turned off the heat in house for temporary work on the furnace two days ago. Forgot to turn it back on. Woke up freezing yesterday morning with 58F in the house. The tank temp. was 71F
Fired up the lights and added a second heater. Temp was back up by yesterday afternoon and nothing seemed to have suffered

How were you reading the 105? If nothing died, I would say that the probe reading the temp is at fault.

Did the tank feel like a hot tub? It should have at that temp. Ice will melt in 75 degree saltwater rapidly also...

jake i didn't know ebo made a non-submersible heater...

that seems ridiculous that it could raise your temp that high-what volume are we talking about? my 200 watter has a hard time keeping up if i crack the window in the winter-and my tank is only 40 ish gallons.

I have never truseted the built in thermostats with heaters. I always use a temperature controller as a fail safe..... When you have thousands of $$ in livestock hate to loose it all over a $30 heater....

I had a 150W ebo that I used in my 30 gallon and it did the same thing. I used three differnt thermometers to see how hot it was and is was between 99 and 103. One was using a little fish or whatever digital and then I used a standard glass aquarium one and then I even grabbed the BBQ tongs that has a temp probe on it. I out ice in bag and it melted extremely fast. I actually ran out of ice from the ice machine before it came back down. Since I have not used an Ebo jagger.

by the way it was a submersible... it may have been a 200w... not sure I guess I will have to check it out. It's for sale if anyone wants it Actually j/k I still use it for heating up the fresh mix-up water.

I stopped by Jake's this morning, it was on a 10g tank, so I believe it. I'll let him back it up, but if a heater that size was stuck on...get out the mac and cheese.

He was using it to test out his skimmer. He put some corals in the tank (so he needed a heater) to have some bio-load for the skimmer to skim before hooking everything up.

That explains why the heater was not running thru the ReefKeeper.
