Amphipod behavior

Just curious if anyone else has seen amphipods making little tube homes in hair algae and ground sediment? I'll get some pics later but it's pretty neat, there are large colonies of burrows they've made in big tufts of old hair algae in my refuge that isn't growing anymore. They shape the algae into burrows that they sit in. On the bottom of the tank they collect detritus into clumps and make the tubes there. It's funny because they've cleaned the bottom of the refugium by using all the sediment to make the little burrows. So you have little mud tubes dotting an otherwise clean acrylic bottom. Carefull what you siphon out during cleaning : ).

Sounds cool. I'd love to see a pic.

Out of curiosity, what about those who have DIY LR. Do you want or need critters like that in a reef tank? Can you buy them?

You deffinately want these creatures. They are a huge part of the filtration and food for the tank. That's why you buy live rock in the first place. There are places that sell them, but would probably be easier to just get some rubble rock with life on it from a member to seed your tank.

I know that every new tank I have setup it usually took about 3 months before I really noticed the big popluations of larger pods out at night.

So if your tank is newer and you have live rock, just give it some time and the creatures will multiply.

Yeah, if you can find one with a red lense over it then the critters won't disband when you shine the light on them.

Since I set up my 10g refugium and keep the light on 24/7 they're out all the time, including bristle worms and others. The refugium is pretty nifty, it's like answering the question, what if I had really bad lighting, forgot to turn it off and had really bad flow in my tank, what would happen?

I started up my tank 3 1/2 weeks ago. I used rock from Dave's sump (which hadn't seen light for a while). He also gave me a couple rocks from our church tank to seed. So I guess the little 'pods will come. I'll check tonight.

Cause I've been in the hobby longer than you.

My camera doesn't have macro ability so forgive the muddy shots. The first shot is one of the hair algae clumps with probably 30 tunnels in it. You should be able to make out a couple of them in the red circle. The second pic is one of the areas where the used all the detritus to make little homes for themselves. About half of them sit in their holes with heads peeking out. The other half are casually wandering around looking for food and bumping into bristleworms.
