alk way off after ph is under control

After having my ph disater the other day I got the ph back to where it should be.

Here is what I checked today:

ph 8.3 ACII probe
CA 460 (salifert test kit)
Alk 18kh (salifert test kit )
(everything else is ok)

How do I now get the Alk back to a more normal level of 8 - 10 ?

What effect does the high Alk have on my tank ?

Are you serious ? I did so many water changes lately with just I/O to get out of the Oceanic

I still have a 3/4 bucket of the Oceanic crap though.

What's the secret of the Oceanic in this situation ?

Also, did you get my last PM ?

Oceanic is High in calcium and low on alk. It will bring it down through a series of water changes.

It's low in alk, that's why. High in Ca, too.

Yes, I got it. Sorry, forgot to respond, but will do so now.

Well if you do 4 more at 40 each you won't have to do any for 6 months then!

He is doing really well. He started to eat right away and was accepted by the other inhabitants right away. He is hanging out with the other two oscellaris and once in a while I see him swim with the Tomato. I must say, I really have been lucky so far with adding livestock to my tank. I have never had any problems with established fish being aggressive towards new comers
(except for the darn yellow Damsel chasing them around a bit at first)

It's a happy family in my tank

this might be wrong but i think you might be best leaving things alone for a few days and see what happens. rather than trying to catch the mouse with the cat and the cat with the dog and then dog with the lion and so on . these are big swings in the chemical make up of your water and manually fixing one with stuff like vinegar will normally end up causing a new problem.

/shrug, but i am a real noob at this . im just going by some stuff i have read in randys forum.

just a question for those that know . was having his PH as high as it was a real disaster that needed to be dealt with in an immediate fashion with things like vinegar or better off done with things like daily 10% water changes for a while . could all these drastic changes be more harmful than having the PH be to high for a while ?

maybe someone who really knows could answer this for us .

As teh ph was extremely high I did have to act immediately. I did have to watch out though that I didn't drop it too fast. I found a lot of good info on how to deal with the situation and I am sure the high alk is an aftermath of what happened the other day.

Now that it is more under control I am doing what all of us do anyways, water changes !
There shouldn't be anything wrong with that.
I was curious though on what kind of effect high alk can have. Haven't found any info on that yet

This might be worth a read for making adjustments.

Not sure of its effects, but it might be somewhere in one of RHF's various pH articles. From a quick scan, it appears the first problem might be precipitation of the calcium.
